An American Returning to Iraq; a Baghdad Boy Getting Out

'World News' Picks Its 'Persons of the Year'

"World News" profiled a range of individuals during 2006 who are finding ways to benefit others in the United States and abroad. We caught up with a few of those featured and have these updates as they are named "Persons of the Year."

Maj. David Rozelle

We met then-Capt. David Rozelle back in March at Walter Reade Hospital. He lost his foot after a 2003 mine explosion blew off the front end of his Humvee.

Instead of retiring or giving up, Rozelle decided after his recovery that he wanted to get back to Iraq.

"They made a decision that day that I was going to get injured," he said. "But I wanted to turn it around and say, 'You know, I can beat this.'"

A year-and-a-half later, Rozelle became the first officer to lose a limb and return to Iraq to command a combat unit.

"I went back and I faced the demon," he said.

After being featured on ABC News, Capt. Rozelle became Maj. Rozelle. And he just completed the North American Ironman competition in Hawaii, a challenge for any athlete. He's getting ready to be team captain of the all-military amputee triathlon team, which will compete nationally in five major races.

Peggy Austin

Peggy Austin is no stranger to having a family member overseas. When we met her last spring, her three sons -- Reggie, Michael and Allen Mouton -- were getting ready to be deployed from Fort Hood in Texas.

The brothers were all going to be serving side by side in the same unit.

"I feel my duty is over there with them -- my brothers, my fellow soldiers, my family," Army medic Reggie Mouton said.

It was not easy for their mother to see them go.

"I would give my life for them any second," Austin said. "I would go to Iraq and do their jobs if it was possible and leave them here."

The Mouton brothers were deployed at the end of October. They e-mail their mother every day and call home once a week. The three brothers shared Christmas dinner together.

For her part, Austin has been sending a steady stream of care packages.
